I bought my pulsar for 48000 in 2004 in TamilNadu paying a roadtax of 2500. Then when i moved to Karnataka, where the roadtax is higher i was asked to pay the difference in roadtax for which i paid 2530. Then after few months i decided to change my registration to KA(karnataka), for which the first step was to request for change of address, so I..
Contacted my issuing RTO in chennai for NOC(no objection certificate), bribes were paid. Then i contacted RTO in Karnataka with all the papers, and the road tax was calculated on my purchase value(without any depreciation), so that amounted to around 5k, hence now the difference becomes 2.5k..
So it is 2.5 k in TN , 5K in Karnataka, and may be the same amount again if i move to another state..If i keep changing my jobs moving to different states, i would end up paying the purchase value of my vehicle as road tax...
All this for something which doesnt exist in India..ROADS..

When you move from one state to another, you can actually get a refund on the tax paid by you in the previous state. The details of the same are available at rto website:

Unfortunately in India this practice of separate payment to each state you decide to live in, after completing 11 months of stay in the state, is toublesome, inefficient and full of corruption.
There are several dis-advantages and loopholes:
1. RTOs and traffic cops mainly use this (veh regn from diff state) as a means to
make money from the drivers (or rather victims).
2. The procedure to pay the tax itself is painful - ideally all you should submit is an authorization to the RTO to collect the balance road tax from the state you bought the vehicle from, and submit a copy of your RC book.
However you need a lot of papers, NOC from prev state, the agents tell you bring your car to the earlier state RTO for inspection, and so on and so forth...
3. Lets say even if you pay the road tax to the state you have moved to, it is a very difficult task to get back the refund from the previous state. As one person at the RTO put it - you have to bribe the people to get the refund and rarely anyone gets that.
4. Lets say you succeeded in paying the road tax to the new state, and due to a job change go back to the previous state OR a different one - the pain starts all over again,
thanks to some really citizen-unfriendly and to a large extent foolish RTO policies in a democratic nation for vehicle regn. transfer or road tax payment.
5. There is still some hope that these policies and procedures are made citizen friendly and intelligent rather than the current state of affairs that is troublesome for the common man moving from one state to another for better job prospects or other reasons.
